Learn the easiest and most efficient method for cutting a bell pepper.
I grow lots of heirloom peppers in my garden every year and this method of cutting has been the most efficient one that I have ever used.
I can slice multiple peppers quickly and easily.
One of my favorite preservation methods for peppers is to freeze them. To do this I will slice up a huge bowl full first before I put them into FoodSaver bags and then into the freezer. I would never be able to slice this many peppers at one time if I wasn’t using a quick and easy way of slicing them.

Quick Tips for Cutting Peppers
- This method will work with any peppers. I use it when I slice jalapeno peppers too. Bell peppers are just larger peppers, so this method is easiest to learn with them.
- While not all peppers are uniform in size and shape, just follow the natural curve of the pepper when cutting.
- When slicing a pepper into strips, make sure you are slicing with the outer skin side down. Peppers have a thick skin and slice better this way and won’t dull your knife as quickly.
- Pepper freeze wonderfully! I wrote a post with step-by-step directions for the best way to freeze them.
Supplies Needed:
- A sharp knife – A chef knife or a cook’s utility knife are both good options.
- A cutting board – I love to use a wooden cutting board to slice up my fruits and vegetables.
- Freshly washed bell peppers – These can be fresh from your garden, from the Farmers Market, or from the grocery store.
- Bowl – I like to use my big stainless steel bread bowl for holding a big batch of sliced peppers (and onions too).
How to Cut Bell Peppers
1. Begin by holding the pepper in your non-dominant hand and the knife in your dominate hand.
2. Make your first cut just off to the side of the green stem. Slice straight down.
3. Next, you are going to rotate the pepper a quarter turn and repeat step two.
4. For the third cut, you are going to rotate a quarter turn and slice straight down again.
5. You probably guessed, but we are going to repeat that quarter turn one last time and slice straight down.
6. Now, you are going to lay it on its side and slice off the bottom. This is the blossom end of the fruit. Cut around the center to remove as much of the pepper as possible.
7. Sometimes there is a little bit of pepper on the top stem side of the pepper remaining. Cut off any remaining bits and add to your bowl.
8. You should be left with very little remaining. Put this in your compost bucket or feed it to the chickens.
9. Slice or dice the peppers and use as you would like.
