Learn how to easily cook any type of rice in your Instant Pot, along with the perfect water to rice ratio needed to cook the most delicious rice. This method is quick to throw together and doesn’t dirty a ton of dishes.
How do you cook rice in an Instant Pot?
Rice is a great addition to so many dishes. With the Instant Pot method, you can easily have this on the table any night of the week.
What is the ratio of rice to water in an Instant Pot?
Believe it or not, the ratio of rice to water in an Instant Pot is ALWAYS 1:1.
Less than you would think, comparing this method to a stovetop method. This is because very little evaporation happens when using the Instant Pot.
Why cook rice in an Instant Pot vs the stovetop?
- For starters, your rice will never boil over in the Instant Pot (as long as your follow the directions that is).
- There isn’t a pile of dirty dishes! It only requires ONE measuring cup and the liner insert of your Instant Pot.
- After you push the ‘pressure button’, you can practically ignore your Instant Pot (keep an ear out for any problems still) and continue on with the rest of the meal.
- Did I mention that this is super easy!?
- Perfectly cooked rice, every time.
What Supplies and ingredients will I need?
- Rice of any kind.
- Cold filtered water or make it more flavorful and nutritious by using cold broth. HERE is my favorite broth.
- 6- or 8-quart Instant Pot. HERE is where you can purchase a 6-quart Instant Pot. HERE is where you can purchase an 8-quart Instant Pot.
How Many Cups of Rice Can You Cook in an Instant Pot?
In theory, 1 cup of raw rice should give you an average of 3 cups of cooked rice.
I would cook 3 cups of raw rice with 3 cups of liquid in a 6-quart Instant Pot. This should give you 9 cups of cooked rice.
For an 8-quart Instant Pot, you can cook 4 cups of raw rice and 4 cups of liquid. This should give you 12 cups of cooked rice.
Use the same measuring cup to measure both the liquid and the raw rice.
What does Natural Pressure Release (NPR) vs Quick Pressure Release (QR) mean?
Let’s start at the beginning. First (in this case) you will add your rice and water or broth to the liner at a rate of 1:1. Next you will set your pressure cook to the proper time. Once the time has stopped, your Instant Pot will start the pressure release process.
Natural Pressure Release or NPR for short, is the process of leaving the Instant Pot set until the pressure comes down completely on its own.
Quick Pressure Release or QR for short, is the process of pushing the (release) valve and letting the steam and pressure out quickly.
Depending on what you are making in your Instant Pot, will determine the method you will want to use.
In the case of the Easy Instant Pot Rice, you are going to want to do the Natural Pressure Release method to ensure that your rice is perfectly cooked and you avoid any sticky or mushy rice.
How Long Do You Cook 1 cup of Rice in an Instant Pot?
That actually depends on what type of rice you are cooking.
Different rice takes different amounts of time to cook. Let’s break each one down a little farther. And remember rice is always cooked at the 1:1 ratio in the Instant Pot. 1 cup rice + 1 cup of liquid = perfectly cooked rice
How to cook Jasmine Rice in an Instant Pot?
Jasmine rice grains are small and delicate. You will want to cook jasmine rice for 3 minutes at HIGH pressure and then do a NPR.
How to cook Basmati rice in an instant pot?
Basmati rice grains are also quite small. Basmati rice like the jasmine rice will take 3 minutes at HIGH pressure and then a NPR.
How to cook white rice in an instant pot?
Regular long-grain white rice will take 4 minutes at HIGH pressure with a NPR.
How to cook sushi rice in an instant pot?
Sushi rice needs to be sticky to be good. Cook sushi rice for 5 minutes at HIGH pressure with a NPR.
How to cook brown rice in an instant pot?
Short grain brown rice’s time gets increased because even though it is called ‘short grain’, it is denser than long-grain white rice. Brown rice will need to cook for 24 minutes at HIGH pressure with a NPR.
How to cook wild rice in an instant pot?
Wild rice gets a little trickier. You might need to play around with this one a bit. I would suggest starting at cooking 30 minutes at HIGH pressure with a NPR.
NOTE: The times always stay the same, no matter how many cups you are making.
How to Make Rice Easily in the Instant Pot
- Begin by placing your Instant Pot on the counter with the seal installed in the lid and the inner pot in the unit.
- Measure the rice in a bowl and add water. Rinse well for 30 seconds. This removes some of the starch and will produce a fluffier rice.
- Add the rice to the inner pot.
- Measure the cold filtered water or flavorful broth and add it to the rice in the pot. Stir to combine.
- Add any salt, spices, garlic, butter, or olive oil if desired.
- Place the lid onto the unit and twist to lock into position.
- Make sure the vent is set to ‘seal’.
- ONLY use the pressure button – the rice setting is only for white rice. Push the pressure button and increase or decrease the time as needed.
- After the cooking process has stopped, leave the Instant Pot sit to naturally release ALL of the pressure. This will allow the moisture to distribute evenly throughout the grains and prevents sticky or mushy rice.
- Carefully remove the lid and fluff with a fork.
